Event Calendar → Featured Story Hard Times Never Sounded So Good: Oliver Johnson's 2005 Blues Album Returns to the Spotlight BY DAVE WILSON Some records don't age. They just wait for the right Wednesday. Oliver Johnson's Hard Times is a 2005 blues album from the Quinn Records TM catalog. This week it's front and center as the label's Wednesday Deal. It's the kind of record the label was built on: honest blues about real life, cut in St. Louis by a musician who has spent decades on bandstands across the city. Oliver Johnson is best known as the man who brought the trumpet to the soul. On Hard Times he goes straight to the blues, and he means every note. 2005 was a big year for Oliver at Quinn Records TM. It also brought Come Thunder Come Lightning, the jazz sides Reminiscence of This Magic Moment and On The Other Side of Midnight, Day Dreaming Again, and the holiday record Christmas Must Be Love. Of all of them, Hard Times is the one to start with. You don't just have to take the record's word for it. Oliver is still working, live every Thursday and Friday night at The Hide Away on Arsenal Street. This year he also returned with Nite Train on the new release Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right. Few artists on the label connect the catalog to the present so directly.
